Abstract
The article is devoted to Antonius Syrctus, a Franciscan theologian of the late 15th century. Syrectus was one of the key authors from the so called formalist tradition which had originated in the Duns Scotus’ doctrine on the formal non-identity between divine Persons and divine attributes. In this tradition formalities are understood as meaningful elements of quiddity. Each of them can be expressed in a separate concept. But the elements neither are distinguished in such a manner as one thing can be distinct from another, nor can be reduced to pure products of a conceptual distinction. The first part of the article considers stages of the tradition formation during the 14th century, related with the names of Franciscus of Mayrone, Nicolas Bonetus and Petrus Thomae. It was the time when a canonical set of seven distinctions was formed, including the formal distinction as only one of them. The second part of the article gives accessible biographical information about Syrectus, which is very concise. Syrectus was a French Franciscan from the second half of the 15th century, an author of a “Treatise on Formalities” inaugurating a new stage in the development of the formalist tradition. The article describes the structure of the treatise, notes its great influence on the Franciscus’ contemporaries and existence of a significant quantity of commentaries to it written in late 15th–16th centuries. The text gives data about actual status of studies which are dedicated to the formalist tradition in general and to Syrectus, particularly. At the end of the article one can find a selected bibliography on the topic. As attachment to the article, the first part of the Syrectus’ “Tractatus formalitatum” is published in Russian translation according to the following edition: Antonius Sirectus. Quinque illustrium auctorum Formalitatum Libelli. Venetiis: Apud Franciscum de Franciscis Senensem, 1588.
