Abstract

The paper is an introduction to the translation of Michael Psellus’ (?) Commentary on Aristotle’s Physics, book III.1–3 and book VIII.10. These parts of the commentary were chosen according to the topic of the chapters. In the commentary on book III.1–3 author considers the Aristotelian definition of motion, and therefore discusses the concepts of possibility, efficiency, and completeness, the constitution of a movable body, and the problem of unity of motion, which includes two subjects: the mover and the movable. The discussion of this problem brings to the fore the notion of the mover’s power, which causes motion in the movable body. And in Book VIII.10 the infinite force of the immaterial first mover, which is the first cause of the Heavens’ motion and also an indirect cause of the motion of all things in the celestial realm, is discussed. The introductory paper gives a brief overview of the text of the commentary and indicates the main problems to be discussed in the Commentary. Translation by T. A. Schukin, Z. A. Barzakh and M. N. Varlamova, translation editing and notes by M. N. Varlamova.
